Puzzle Exchange - Logic Puzzle

Recommended Posts

As a gift for myself, the first puzzle exchange will be… LOGIC PUZZLES!!

Technically, any puzzle that requires deduction (logic) to solve is a logic puzzle, but for this exchange, the focus will be logic grid puzzles, also called table puzzles. A logic puzzle contains several categories with an equal number of options in each category. Each option can only be used once. The goal is to figure out which options go together using the clues provided. A logic puzzle should have one unique answer.

This is the type of puzzle used for HOL Snitch matches. Unlike Snitch matches, the logic puzzles you create for this exchange are not limited to 5x4 in size. A famous logic puzzle is the Zebra Puzzle, in which you must figure out who owns the zebra.

If you are unsure how to start, the best way is to try some logic puzzles. I recommend Logic-Puzzles.org and Puzzler’s Paradise.

Post your puzzles below with the following information:

  • Background information
  • Clues
  • Size - 4x4, 4x3, 5x4, etc. (optional)
  • Grid (optional)
  • How to submit an answer - E-mail, Dungeons PM, HOL message, etc.

Each puzzle you make is worth 10 scales. Solving someone else’s puzzle earns you 5 scales. You are allowed to post and/or solve multiple puzzles, but keep in mind that the maximum number of scales you can earn per month from Puzzle Exchange is 50 scales.

Please remember to edit your post when other people solve your puzzle(s) so they can receive their scales.

On her first ever trip on the Hogwarts Express, Vivian and her Pygmy Puff ended up in a compartment with four other first years. They became fast friends, chatting the entire train ride. The hottest topic was which class they were most looking forward to and none of them picked the same one. Each student had a different type of pet, who also got acquainted with each other as their owners bonded. For each student, determine their name, the subject they are most looking forward to, the type of pet they own, as well as the name of their pet.

1. Olivia, the owner of Misty (who isn’t Poppy), and the student looking forward to Potions are all different people. Surprisingly, the cat got along with Nibbles the rat.

2. Between Kestrel and the owner of Wayne (who is not a toad), one is excited for Potions and the other student can’t wait for Charms. Poppy doesn’t own the rat.

3. Hopkins doesn’t belong to Poppy, who is very interested in Herbology. Olivia doesn’t think she will like Transfiguration or Charms.

4. The Pygmy Puff’s owner wasn’t the student who was excited to take Transfiguration. Lize was in awe of the owl and wanted to ask her parents if she could get one.

5. Dixie’s owner doesn’t care for Potions or Defense Against the Dark Arts. The toad’s owner can’t wait for Potions.

Four students were out of their beds late at night. Figure out which student went where (one place was the kitchens), which Hogwarts house they were from, and how late they were out of bed (midnight-3am).

1. Brandon, who is not a member of Ravenclaw, carefully made it to the Forbidden Forest. Elyse watched him from the Astronomy Tower.

2. Marcel was out an hour longer than Elyse. Ingrid did not visit the Restricted Section of the library.

3. The person from Ravenclaw stayed out an hour longer than the person from Slytherin.

4. Out of Brandon and Elyse, one is a Slytherin and the other was out until 1am.

5. Out of the person from Gryffindor and the one who visited the Restricted Section, one was out until 3am and the other was Marcel.

***Posting for the ghost Laverne Carrington***

A club! How lovely! I remember joining a painting club when I was a student at Hogwarts. We met every Thursday after classes in the North Tower

There was a special Halloween exhibition one year, where eight of our paintings were selected and hung on each wall. I remember that my Thestral was on wall 7. The Poltergeist was across from the Black Cat. The Headless Horseman wasn’t next to the Scarecrow, which was hung on an odd numbered wall. The Pumpkin Patch was two places clockwise from the Werewolf and opposite the winged horse. The Scarecrow was across from the Werewolf. The Black Cat was located at the wall two higher than the Headless Horseman, which was across from the Bonfire.

It was a lovely exhibit. I can practically see it now, can you?

For the Winter Reading Challenge, several HOL members, including Shadow, have pledged to read 1 to 5 books. Each person is focusing on a different genre, like mystery. In order to receive credit for the books, they must post in a different section of the HOL Book Club (one reader posted in “Magical Merge”).

1. Katelin, the person who pledged 3 books, and the one who wanted to read science fiction (who pledged to read 5 books) are three different people.

2. The person who pledged 2 books is either the “Presenting Author” poster or Bianca, who wasn’t planning on reading horror or science fiction. Neither the historical fiction nor the horror readers did the “Presenting Author” post.

3. Of Aurelia and the fantasy reader, one posted in “Methods of Storytelling” and the other did a “Presenting Author” post. Shiloh pledged 1 book.

4. The science fiction reader pledged two more books than the person who posted a “Book Review.” Aurelia pledged one more book than the person who wanted to read fantasy.

5. The person who posted in “Favourite Characters,” the one planning to read fantasy, and the reader pledging 4 books are all different HOL’ers.

A few Quidditch players were thirsty and so went to The Three Broomsticks to get something to drink (one of which was cherry syrup and ice. Who went there, what did they order, how much did they pay for it (2.50, 2.75, 3.00, 3.25 and 3.50) and where did they end up sitting?

1. Of Fred's drink and the one of the person who sat on the table, one costs 2.50 and the other was gillywater. Alicia did not sit by the bar or on a stool.
2. The person who sat by the fire had a drink which cost .25 less than George's drink. The 3.25 drink was not for the person who sat on the table.
3. The person who sat at the bar didn't drink firewhiskey. Neither the person who drank butterbeer nor George's drink cost 3.25.
4. The drink of the person who sat by the fire cost less than the firewhiskey. Of the person who sat on the table and the person who drank coffee, one was Katie and the other paid 3.50.
5. The person who drank firewhiskey paid .75  less than the person who sat in a chair. Oliver's drink wasn't coffee or gillywater.

Fred and George are up to more mischief yet again! This time they corralled some other students and experimented with another variety of potions. Who were the students they found, what kind of potion did each one drink, what years were the students (of 1st through 5th) and where did they drink the potion?

1. The person who drank the potion at the Quidditch pitch got either the furry face or the squeaking voice.  The person drinking the potion in the Great Hall was an older student than Roger and two years down from Arthur.
2.  Of the potion that Arthur drank and the one drunk by the 4th year student, one was drunk in the Bathroom and the other caused a pink beard to sprout.
3. Dennis is one class year up from the person who drank the potion in the Library.
4. Anna drank the potion in the Library.  Dennis's potion caused him to have purple hair.
5. Roger's potion didn't give him a furry face. Of the potion Anna drank and the one that Mike drank, one causes flapping ears and the other was drunk in Greenhouse 3.

Happy Year of the Dog!!

6601b61d09.png

At a Chinese New Year dinner to celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Dog, five different people happened to be born in the Year of the Dog (from 1958 to 2006). Each person brought a different lucky dish (one was oranges) to share with everyone at the dinner. In addition to being born in the Year of the Dog, they are all proud dog owners of five different breeds of dog, including a husky.

1. Albert was 24 years older than the corgi owner. The owner of the poodle was born in 1982.

2. Of the maltese owner and the person who brought fish, one was born in 1970 and the other was Ben.

3. Jack brought dumplings, but he didn’t have a corgi. The labrador owner either brought the fish or the noodles.

4. Kevin didn’t bring noodles. Steve was 12 years younger than the maltese owner.

5. Between the person who was born in 1970 and the one who brought spring rolls, one was Steve and the other owned a poodle.

An exchange program was initiated between different schools of magic. Who are the people who went from Hogwarts to different schools (one boy and one girl in each student group), in what month did they go, and to which school of magic did they go?

1. Neither the students going to Uagadou nor Hannah's group will be the students leaving in August. Fred's group won't be leaving in August and will not be going to Durmstrang.

2. The five groups will be Susan's group, the students leaving in September, Draco's group, Fred's group and the students going to Ilvermorny. The students leaving in October will be either Ginny's group or Colin's group.

3. The students leaving in July won't include Hannah. Of the students leaving in October and the students going to Castelobruxo, one will include Draco and the other will include Luna.

4. Of Ginny's group and the students leaving in June, one will include Draco and the other will be going to Uagadou.  The group going to Beauxbatons won't include Ginny or Neville.

5. Ernie's group will leave sometime after the students who go to Ilvermorny.   Colin's group will leave in June and will not include Pansy.

This spring Professor McGonagall decided to expand the students' repertoire a bit by having them give a talk about a subject of her choosing, from the podium in the Great Hall, at breakfast. The kicker is that they would be graded for it, by the Professor who taught it. They were given a minimum time (6 minutes) and a maximum time (15 minutes) for how long their talk will be.  Who are the students, what did they talk about, how long did they talk and what grades were they given for their talk?

1. The student who gave the talk on Charms spoke for a shorter time than the presenter who gave the talk on Transfiguration.   The student who gave the talk on Charms was either Harry or the student who spoke for 8 minutes. The five students were the one who talked for 14 minutes, the one who talked about Divination, one of those who received an Acceptable, the person who talked about Charms and the person who talked for 8 minutes
2. The student who gave a talk on Herbology was either the student who spoke for 8 minutes or the student who spoke for 6 minutes.  The student who got a 'Dreadful' didn't talk about Ancient Runes.
3. Hermione spoke for a shorter time than the student who got an 'Exceeds Expectations'.  The student who spoke for 10 minutes talked about Divination, and wasn't Dean.
4. The student who spoke for 8 minutes was either the student who got an 'Exceeds Expectations' or the student who gave the talk on Transfiguration. The person who spoke about Ancient Runes received an 'Acceptable' for their grade. Ron talked 4 minutes less than the person who received a 'Dreadful'.
5. Neville spoke 2 minutes more than the student who gave the talk about Ancient Runes. The student who spoke for 12 minutes got one of the two 'Acceptable' grades. The student who got an 'Outstanding' spoke 2 minutes more than Neville.

Hogwarts is redecorating! Visitors are coming and Professor McGonagall assigned a boy&girl team to go to different classes and decorate them. Who were on the teams, which classroom did they decorate and what was the primary colour for that classroom?

1. The boy who decorated the classroom with pink didn't work with Angelina.  Zacharias didn't decorate his classroom, which wasn't Divination, with turquoise or maroon.

2. The boy decorating with magenta worked with Luna. Ernie didn't decorate the Potions class. Turquoise was used to decorate the Charms class.
3. The boy who decorated the Transfiguration class didn't work with Pansy or Hermione.  Of Angelina and Zacharias, one decorated the Potions class and the other used emerald as their decorating colour.
4. Neville decorated the Charms class.  Of Susan and Zacharias, one decorated the Transfiguration classroom and the other decorated the Arithmancy classroom.
5. George, not Fred, used magenta in his decoration scheme; he didn't decorate the Charms classroom.  The boy who used  emerald to decorate either worked with Angelina or worked with Pansy.

Five of the top Chasers from the British and Irish Quidditch League met up in a fancy Wizarding club!
Upon talking, it became apparent that each of them wears a different uniform number (one of which is 99), plays for a different team (one of which is the Wanderers), and scored a different number of goals in their last game.
Match each player to their uniform number, team played, and number of goals scored.

1. Of the person who wears number 9 and the player from the Harpies, one is Duran and the other had 6 goals last game.  The player from the Bats scored 1 goal less than the player from the Magpies.
2. The player with 7 goals doesn't wear number 42.  Zimmerman doesn't wear number 42.
3. Tucker scored 1 goal more than Parrish.  No player scored more than 10 or fewer than 6 goals.
4. Zimmerman isn't from the Cannons.  The person who wears number 9 is either the player from the Bats or the person with 7 goals.
5. Of Zimmerman and Underwood, one had 10 goals last game and the other wears number 5.  The person from the Magpies scored 2 goals less than the person who wears number 6.

After their retirement, five famous quidditch stars who got their start right here at HOL (one star was Matt Whisp) endorsed test models of new racing brooms!
Their endorsement consisted of taking a given company's newest broom (one company was Oakshaft) and flying it for a long distance at a high speed (one broom was flown 405 miles).
Match each star to the company they endorsed, the distance traveled, and its speed!

1. Of Cassandra Lobiesk's broom and the Firebolt company's broom, one was flown for 505 miles and the other was flown at a speed of 72 MPH.  The Firebolt company's broom wasn't flown by Isabelle Aude.
2. The broom that was flown at a speed of 67 MPH was flown somewhat farther than the Nimbus company's broom.  The broom flown at a speed of 62 MPH was flown for 305 miles.
3. Ron Diggory's broom was flown for 200 fewer miles than the broom flown at 65 MPH.
4. The Cleansweep company's broom was flown for 200 miles further than Seven Ashitaka's broom.  The Cleansweep company's broom was flown for 505 miles.
5. The Yajirushi company's broom was neither flown at a speed of 70 MPH nor for a distance of 605 miles.  Of the Nimbus company's broom and the Yajirushi company's broom, one was flown for 205 miles and the other was flown at a speed of 65 MPH; of the two of them, the broom that was flown slower went a further distance.
