There is very little that can be done to protect yourself from a lethifold attack - they are very sneaky creatures who can enter a room through the thinnest gap and kill quickly in the night through smothering victims, so I would imagine that often, the victim doesn't even have the chance to wake up and scream. The only known method of defense is the Patronus Charm, so the best way to protect myself would be to practice this charm and make sure I could cast it quickly and effectively in an emergency. I suppose there are also some minor ways to help, such as trying to block any gaps into your house and room.

I think one of the best additions to the current Slytherin house pets would be a horned serpent. Horned serpents can be befriended, which we know from the fact that Isolt Sayre named one of the Ilvermorny houses after them, and they definitely fit the Slytherin vibe, as they are a snake. They are mainly water-dwelling creatures, meaning that they would likely get on well with Annabelle, and be able to hang out with her in the lake, but they would also likely get on well with Basil the Basilisk, because they are both types of snakes. They are also very intelligent creatures, so I'm sure they'd fit well amongst the Slytherins!

If I could tame any magical creature, I would probably choose a hippogriff. Hippogriffs are very proud, and so they might take a while to fully trust me, but when they did, they would be an amazing pet to have. They would be a fun animal to take care of and look after, but they are also useful in many ways. They are very defensive, and I can imagine that they would do a good job of protecting a friend if they needed to, as they happily attack anyone who comes too close to them without their permission. They can also be used as a mode of transport, which would be very useful.
