October 2020 Challenge: Q*bert

Recommended Posts

Didn't September go by fast?  At the Arcade Club we have yet another game for October:  one that might test your sense of direction like no other!  This time, we're back to the eighties in a world where (sadly) snakes are the villains... that's right, we'll be playing Q*bert this month!

Q*bert was released in 1982 by a Chicago-based arcade game corporation called Gottlieb.  In this game, you control a character named Q*bert, who starts the game at the top of a pyramid of cubes.  Jumping on a cube will change its colour, and Q*bert's goal is to make all of the cubes the same 'target' colour - at first, this means jumping on each cube exactly once... but later levels will require multiple jumps per cube, or even cause jumps to revert cubes away from their goals!  And, to add to the challenge, Q*bert is pursued by monsters that mean instant death on context:  from a rolling ball to a bouncing purple spring-like snake named Coily (you'd expect a snake named Coily would give you a hug to support you, but this one doesn't play like that ;))!  Fortunately you can jump off the grid to one of two circular disks which will teleport you safely to the top and eliminate at least some of your enemies - but did I mention that any other jump off the grid will also kill you?   At least you will have fun trying to decipher Q*bert's famously incomprehensible  gibberish when you lose a life!

For this month's challenge, you want to go to THIS LINK to play Q*bert.  Screencap your best performance (and post it in this thread) by October 31 at 11:59 PM HOL!

(WARNING:  Although you will be using the arrow keys to move, jumping is counterintuitive because you move diagonally in the game; in the arcade this was done by the Muggle contraption known as the "joystick".  In particular, the up arrow moves Q*bert in the up-right direction, the right arrow moves Q*bert in the down-right direction, the down arrow moves Q*bert in the down-left direction, and the left arrow moves Q*bert in the up-left direction.  You'll probably make a few mistakes your first few plays of the game - but you'll catch on eventually!)

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you score 1000 points or higher - or beat the first round (i.e. advance to at least Round 2 of Level 1), your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards!

PS:  Feel free to edit your post throughout the month as you improve your score!
