February 2019 Game Challenge: Crystal Castles

Recommended Posts

Our next monthly challenge for Arcade Club will feature the game Crystal Castles!  Although this game was released by Atari in 1983, it was ahead of its time in many ways:  from its three-dimensional graphics to the Nutcracker Suite themed music - including one of the most epic failure melodies of its time for "Game Over"!  If you played the game enough when you were younger, you are probably humming those thirteen notes with me right now (followed by two drum beats); if they're not familiar to you yet, they will be very soon!

In this game you control a character named "Bentley Bear" who is trying to collect gems in each stage.  (The original controller was a Muggle "track ball"; most likely, you will be using a device known as a "mouse" to simulate the effect).  Your nemesis is a witch named Berthilda, but you won't see her in most of the stages.  Instead, you'll see enemies such as balls, trees (true to its 1980s roots, this may be the first game to depict trees as villains), and weird spiral-shaped green monsters "gem eaters" who will try to capture gems for themselves... and, most of the time, are lethal on contact!  You can escape them by jumping, collecting a magical hat, or - if they're a gem eater - sneaking up on them while they're eating a gem.  There are plenty of other hidden secrets in the game that may or may not help you out, but you'll have to find them for yourself!

For this month's challenge, you want to go to THIS LINK and play Crystal Castles there.  Screencap your best performance (and post it in this thread) by February 28 at 11:59 PM HOL!

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you score 5000 points or higher - or at least make it to the stage called "Tree Wave Level 1" (the second stage in the game), your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards!

PS:  Feel free to edit your post throughout the month as you improve your score!
