January 2019 Game Challenge: Centipede

Recommended Posts

Our first monthly challenge in the year 2019 for Arcade Club will feature the game Centipede!  If you were in the dungeons for the most recent edition of the Emerald Cup, you probably remember this game as one of the challenges.  It was released by Atari in 1981, making this our first selection from the "golden age" of Arcade games.

In this game, you control a pentagonal shooter towards the bottom of a screen; the shooter was supposed to represent a human head.  A multi-segmented centipede moves towards you in a predictable pattern for you to shoot:  getting a regular segment will earn you ten points and getting its head will get you 100 points (and create a new head).  Once you completely defeat the centipede, the screen changes color, a new centipede appears at the top of the screen, Meanwhile, mushrooms - which require multiple shots to defeat and only award a single point - block both your motion and that of the centipede, while deadlier creatures, worth more points, complicate the game in other ways!

For this month's challenge, you want to go to THIS LINK and play Centipede there.  Screencap your best performance (and post it in this thread) by January 31 at 11:59 PM HOL!

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you score 2,019 points or higher, your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-SPECIAL BONUS FOR THIS MONTH ONLY:  If you post an additional screencap where you score exactly one point at Game Over, you will get an additional 5 scale bonus!

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards!

PS:  Feel free to edit your post throughout the month as you improve your score!
