The highest finisher for March 2024 who made a game request, Prof. Amy Lupin, requested a sci-fi theme that did not involve flashing lights or animations.  We get to go back to the classics for this one - with a game that starts out reasonable and then gets hard:  Gradius!

Gradius is an arcade game that was released by Konami in 1985 (outside of Japan the game was initially known as Nemesis).  In this game, you control a ship named... Vic Viper (you were expecting it to be named Gradius, right?  No, that's just the name of its home planet) trying to save the planet of Gradius from the enemy Bacterian star cluster with an ultimate goal of trying to attack the core of the enemy fortress, the Xaerous.  As the ship flies around, it starts out with a gun that it can fire directly at weak enemies... and then can pick up power-up capsules which can be used to purchase power-ups in game (such as "Speed", which increase the speed of the ship - or other power-ups that give the ship stronger weapons).  After a while, you'll need those power-ups to be able to hold your own against increasingly stronger enemies!  Although you should be able to make progress in the game without too much work, towards the end of the first stage (if you ever make it that far) you will be faced with a volcano sending tonnes of rocks at you in all directions (which you need to avoid and shoot at in order to survive).  If you can make it through there there's a stage boss called the Big Core MK I that you need to destroy (it has lasers it shoots at you)!  And then things continue and get still harder...

For this month, you want to go to THIS LINK  to play Gradius.  Screencap proof of your high score by April 30 at 11:59 PM HOL!  (And in your post, also include what type of game you want to play in May:  are you thinking of 'action'?  'adventure'?  'puzzle'?  'web game'?  'Golden Era of gaming'?  'In the past five years'?  If you win the month, I will try to make it happen!)

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you earn at least 2024 points (which happens pretty quickly; definitely much quicker than trying to advance to the second level), your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards (and the chance for the next month's game to be in your honour)!

NOTE: You can press the Enter key to start the game; when you're actually playing you will use your arrow keys to move, the X key to fire your weapon, and the Z key to purchase a power-up.  When you die you lose all purchased power-ups but keep the unused capsules you haven't invested yet... which may be useful for strategy!

FINAL STANDINGS FOR APRIL 2024

1st: River Fenwick - 22300 points (Gold Joystick)

2nd: Prof. Will Lestrange - 21500 points (Silver Joystick)

3rd: Hiya Debnath - 15300 points (Bronze Joystick)

No one expressed any preference this month, so I will look for another classic game (likely one much easier to play) for May!
