Christmas at HOL is a festive occasion to say the least. House Elves can be seen scattered about hanging tinsel, charming candles and twinkling lights, decorating the tree on the Great Hall with baubles bigger than their head and whispering excitedly about the upcoming feast. Mistletoe seemed to be growing all over the place and Lucia, despite usually being a gigantic Scrooge, was feeling festive around the castle this year. The castle was certainly a romantic. Her Hogsmeade trips had helped with spending the holidays away from family, and although she missed them all so dearly she knew it wouldn't be long until they were next reunited. Murdoc's black paw pads pattered behind her, weaving in and out of her flowing cloak.

She had lots to do over the holidays, lots of homework to catch up on and studying for exams. 'Why didnt you do this earlier, Lucia? You wouldn't have to spend the best part of New Year's Eve here would you?' She berated herself silently as her eyes landed on the great oak library doors. She sighed. 'So it begins...'

Emelio sat down with a book labeled, "The Exquisite Art of Potion Making." She knew it was the holidays, but she couldn't help but read the book her father got her for her birthday. "Happy (late) birthday to me!" She muttered as she opened the book. Archimedes, her albino python, sat curled on her head, pouting because all the students were celebrating new years eve.

I have nobody to scare! He whined. Ooo! Look who it is Em! he turned his head as the library doors opened. Emelio peered behind a shelf and saw her new friend, Lucia, walking in with a crest-fallen face, her black cat, Murdoc, trailing behind her.

You know, you really should make friends with Murdoc. Emelio said to Arc.

I'll try. He said as he slithered down her arm to the floor. Emelio waved Lucia over as she looked for a table to sit at, her arms full of books.

"Hey Lucia!" Emelio smiled. "What brings you to the library on a holiday?"

Lucia's eyes lit up as she took in the familiar face of Emilio, Archimedes sneakily making his way to a cautious looking Murdoc. "Go on Doc, say hello," She whispered before turning her attention back to Emilio.

"Mind if I join you?" Lucia asked as she settled her heavy pile of books into the seat next to Emilio, "I'm trying to get through the last of my exams so I have time to grade everyone's papers and submit my Howler Article. I seem to have left everything until the very last minute...oops. What are you up to?"

"Oh nothing much. Just reading this book my dad bought me for my birthday. I know everyone's celebrating New Year's Eve, but my traditional festivities music begin way later than 7 p.m. What all do you have to do? I know exams are hard, but so far some of the subjects seem relatively easy! Did you know I've already moved on to 3rd year level potions? But enough about what I'm doing. Is there anyway I could help? You know, quizzing you and all that." Emelio smiled at her friend, then whipped her head around; she heard a loud thud. "Arc!" She hissed, "what are you doing?" Her mischievous snake was sliding on the bookshelves with a running Murdoc, causing books to fall onto the floor. "Good lord." She muttered.

“Perhaps he’s reminding me of the lack of reading I’ve done this year.” Lucia laughed at her friend, scratching her head, “I’m normally all up to date but with teaching this year and all of my outside HOL activities I’ve fallen behind where I’d like to be. There is just so much to do.” Lucia sighed deflated.

“Perhaps I’m just overthinking it,” Lucia confided in her friend, “I just want to be great at everything.”
