Fun in Translation

Recommended Posts

I sent my cousin a "Happy Birthday" sticker via LINE (the messaging app that everyone in Taiwan uses) and he replied with a sticker that said "3Q."

"Three-Q?" I thought. It took me a few minutes, but then I finally got it. "Three" in Mandarin Chinese is "san," so "san-Q" sounds like "Thank you."

Another one I like is 881. That is "ba-ba-yi" in Chinese. When it is said quickly, it sounds like "bye-byeeeeeeee."

Do you have any fun in translation stories?

I remember when I was studying German in college, our class was so excited to hear our professor use the term "licka-licka" for lollipop or popsicle. I haven't been able to find the term in any official dictionaries, so it might just be slang in German Kazakhstan.
