May 2019 Game Challenge: Galaga

Recommended Posts

As April turns to May, it is time for the penultimate monthly challenge in the academic year for the Arcade Club. This one will feature the game Galaga!  While this game featured in the OASIS, it did not make an appearance in last year's Emerald Cup.  But we are about to rectify that omission right now!

Galaga was made by Namco Japan in 1981 and released in the US by Midway in the same year.  It was a hit in arcades, as well as on the Nintendo Entertainment System several years later.

While this game is every bit as grounded in Muggle thought as last month's game, it is an "opposite' in many ways.  While last month you were controlling a frog trying to maneuver its way around Muggle cars, this month you get to control a Muggle spaceship engaged in aerial combat with other spaceships!  In this game, you control a spaceship floating around on the bottom of a screen.  While it can only move horizontally, it can shoot vertically.  Meanwhile, strings of enemy ships fly towards you before settling into their formation; shooting their weapons at you every once in a while.  And once you've defeated most of the ships, they will break formation and start flying towards you!  Colliding into an enemy ship or bullet will take away one of your lives, though colliding with a ship will at least end their life too.  And so the game goes on...

For this month's challenge, you want to go to THIS LINK and play Galaga there.  Screencap your best performance (and post it in this thread) by May 31 at 11:59 PM HOL!

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you score 4000 points or higher - or beat Level 1, your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards!

-For additional bonus scales:  at the end of the game, a screen displays your "Hit/Miss Ratio".  The person who submits a screencap with the highest hit/miss ratio (as long as they score at least 1000 points in this screencap) will get an additional 5 bonus scales!

PS:  Feel free to edit your post throughout the month as you improve your score!
