March 2019 Game Challenge: Dig Dug

Recommended Posts

Our next monthly challenge for Arcade Club will feature the game Dig Dug!  Yet another "Golden Age" video game that the OASIS missed, this game was released in 1982.  The theme of the game is "counterintuitive":  your weapons are not what you would think at first glance!  In this game, you can move freely through the dirt and air that make up your two dimensional world - but you move through the dirt by digging it so that it disappears!  Meanwhile, you are pursued by "Pookas" (basic enemies that can walk through empty space, but not through dirt) and "Fygars" (dragon-like creatures that become transparent to move through dirt).  Both can kill you on contact, but the Fygars can also kill you from a short range via flame!

You can 'shoot' at your enemies from a distance, but as your 'shooting' ranged weapon is not a gun but a bicycle gun, a single shot doesn't kill them.  You need multiple shots to kill your enemies by blowing them up so they pop like a balloon!  But the 'preferred' way to kill them is by removing the dirt under a rock so that it crushes your enemy to death... did I mention that the rock can also crush you to death?  Oh, and the music is its own bit of fun:  the main theme only plays while you move, pauses while you pause, and restarts where it left off when you resume!  And there are plenty of other musical surprises as well, but I'll only reveal one:  while last month's game had an epic "Game Over" theme, this game is unique for having a "Game Over" theme that sounds like it should be a victory theme!

For this month's challenge, you want to go to THIS LINK and play Dig Dug there.  Screencap your best performance (and post it in this thread) by March 31 at 11:59 PM HOL!

-Participation at all will earn you 5 scales.

-If you score 2500 points or higher - or at least make it to Level 2, your screencap will earn you 10 scales instead of 5.

-The top three scores of the month will get extra scales (25, 20, and 15 respectively for the month instead of 5 or 10) as well as special awards!

PS:  Feel free to edit your post throughout the month as you improve your score!
