  2. I see New Year's Resolutions as those plans that are abandoned by February 1st, but they are oh, so tempting to make! Who doesn't want a do-over and a fresh chance to finally reach those goals? My favorite has been to "live every day if it were my last." While I am an ambitious Slytherin, that seems a bit too difficult for me, because on some days I just don't get much accomplished. My resolution this year is a simple, "live each day with regrets." In other words, don't do something stupid you'll regret later, February!
  3. We have a traditionof eating cooked cabbage on New Year's Day. It's supposed to bring you good luck and good fortune throughout the year. We also hide change in the cabbage - one quarter and several nickels. We never hide dimes in case someone gets choked. We skipped the tradition this year because mom had passed away and none of us really felt up to it. Recipe: Ingredients: 1 head of cabbage 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ teaspoon salt black pepper, to taste Instructions: Slice cabbage into quarters, removing & discarding the hard stem at the center. Slice each quarter into 1-inch wide strips. Set aside. In a large pot, melt the butter and add olive oil. Add remaining ingredients to the pot, including the cabbage. Stir and bring to a boil, immediately reduce heat to a simmer, and cover. Simmer 12-15 minutes or until cabbage is tender to your liking. (Do not overcook or cabbage will be slimy)
  4. My latest indoor hobby this year has been ancestry. I've even had my DNA completed. Not only is it attached to a family website, but I also submitted it to a site where police can use it to catch criminals. Go get 'em, I say! The DNA has turned up some interesting matches. You've heard those stories about people having their DNA done and discovering they aren't related to their own father? This is a variation on that. I have an account on one particular website and there are 2 females who show up and are related to me on my paternal side through DNA only: Gwen- 1st cousin, and Natalie - 1st cousin/2nd cousin. No clue who they are. Someone had an affair, or 2 someones 😀 Considering the DNA we inherit, it could have been my dad, his dad, my aunt, or a cousin. Natalie finally contacted me. Turns out Gwen is her mother. Gwen was adopted. She found her birth certificate later, and she had been named with the same surname as mine. She was born in in 1930's in a city an hour's drive from here and her biological father was a traveling salesman. Gwen has been trying to find her biological parents but gave up in the 90's. Let's see....my grandfather was an engineer on the railroad and traveled constantly. His daughter was born the same year as Gwen, and his son, 2 years later . Gwen has his's nose and forehead. She looks alot like his sister. Heck, I look more like her than my own parents!! This January our family has expanded. I kind of feel bad for her. You know she was hoping to find her mother's side and hear that heartwarming " I gave my baby up for adoption" story. Instead, she found her father's family! LOL What can I say? Welcome to the family! And I've been working to find her mom's family. Least I can do, I suppose.
  5. I love baklava! As you can probably tell, I'm not much into cooking, but I enjoyed this activity! You also brought some hearty laughter into my home when I asked the actual cook of the family, my brother: "What’s the difference between cooking and baking?" We all have to start somewhere, right? Well done, Maeve!
  6. I recently cooked soup beans with bacon. Delicious!!
  7. I am a gifted baker of tater tots!
  8. This is a tough one, but I think i prefer baking to cooking. My absolute favorite is to borrow home cooked dishes others have made and heat them up in the oven. Recently we had baked spaghetti with melted cheese on top, and it was excellent! For Thanksgiving, a friend sent over a bowl of macaroni and cheese with real melted cheese. Baking for me!
  9. My favorite part of any aspect of cooking is sampling the food while it is in the process of becoming the chosen dish! I especially prefer sweets. My least favorite part is the preparation. I have zero patience for chopping, stirring, mixing, waiting for the right consistency, and such. It bores me to no end. I'd rather wash the dishes.
  10. My favorite trail at a local park has gorgeous scenery:
  11. I am, without a doubt, the dishwasher of any group I find myself in. I am truly a horrible cook. I'm on blood thinners because of an autoimmune disorder, so I have to be careful not to cut myself. I have both astigmatism and a lazy eye, so I'm dangerous with a knife, and that rules out all cutting and chopping. I have no patience with stirring and all of that. Finally, I'm so dingy, I have exploded jello because I couldn't follow the instructions on the back of the box. It's the sink for me.
  12. My favorite kitchen tool is a sauce pan. Sauce pans are so versatile! So many recipes call for boiling water, and these pans are practically a requirement. You can heat up all sorts of foods, such as a jar of Spaghetti sauce of a can of vegetables or even soup. Once the pan has been washed, it can be used again. Hard to beat that!
  13. I don't cook. At all. I rely on others. Th as t being said, there is a recipe I have learned to excel in. Take 1/4 cup of cold water and sprinkle jello/gelatin into it. Stir quickly until it begins to gel. Stir in 1/4 cup hot (not boiling) water. Add 1 1/2 cups fruit juice (pineapple juice seems to be least effective at geling) Taste the mixture. If not sweet enough, add sweetener to taste. Find gelatin mold or gelatin cups, etc.Fill half with gelatin mixture. Next, if you want, add some fruit. Add rest of mixture. Stir. Cover. Refrigerate at least three hours. Good luck!
  14. I enjoy horror movies, such as the Shining, Halloween, and the Exorcist. I enjoy true crime or a really good documentary. Along with The Dead Poets Society, my favorite movie is The Green Mile. I also love the original Fright Night. I own Fright Night 2 on DVD, which seems to be uncommon
  15. Ravenclaw According to your binge-watching choices, you are a witty, creative Ravenclaw. Ravenclaws tend to be academically motivated and talented students. You are willing to do research to figure out the solution to a problem. You also tend to be a perfectionist as well. As for your tv watching, you probably love a wide variety of shows, but gravitate towards shows where you learn new things. Some of your favorite shows are clever and witty, just like you. l
  16. Thanks so much everyone for hosting this! I had a bootiful time.
  17. When Green vs. Silver began many years ago, Green Team was called Rabblerousers and Silver Team was called Argentum Cruoris. Sirithre Leylnn created banners for each team, as well as many others, which are posted above. Slytherin rules on this forum only states you are permitted one of these banners along with your regular signature image. Just a note: I am not a staff member. Just a fourth year.
  18. Innocent (if the owl is like Hedwig) Prefers the ocean to the mountains
