  2. Amelia Black has 30 years and chooses to attempt to join the Order only because her alleged mother was saved by them (with a detailed history of her mother, being an outstanding baker and apparently stolen and saved by the Order) and Amelia has followed in her mother's footsteps except she feels an overwhelming gratitude towards the Order and wishes to be of service to them. No outstanding baker herself, she nonetheless is a pretty good cook and keeps the kitchen clean and tidy. People always need to have food to eat! Food, drinks and a place to enjoy them. So while she doesn't claim to have any outstanding talents of magic or abilities, she knows that people like to eat. That's pretty much it -- and she can back it up with examples of cooking if they will show her to their kitchen area. She doesn't mind being bossed by someone else, either; she's no wish to be in charge of the kitchen and meals, just wishes to be of service because of her felt gratitude.
  3. My chosen secret society is based on mysteries called the Eleusinian. Based upon natural cycles of nature, Demeter and Kore (Demeter's daughter, also called Persephone) are agricultural deities. The Athenians had a belief that they received, direct from Demeter, knowledge of grain cultivation. According to the Greeks, Demeter herself was the one to teach them their rites, per Homer and his hymn to Demeter, which thus revealed the foundation mythos of the Eleusinian cult. According to the mythos of this society, Hades abducted Kore while she was picking flowers in a meadow and carried her off to the Underworld. Demeter finds Kore in Eleusis ... and was wrathful, causing a complete failure of crops. Zeus ordered his brother (Hades) to return Kore but (but!) Hades tricked Kore into eating some pomegranate seeds before leaving, which meant she had to return to the Underworld in part of the year. So, during the Great Elusinia, there is a reenactment of the drama ... and of the blessings of Demeter and Kore upon the peoples of earth. There was the public reenactment ... and then there were things done which were only for the inner members of the society. Of interest to me is that, even though Demeter and Kore are female deities, in the more open area of joining the Eleusinian secret society, people of all genders and ages were able to belong to it. Of course, I don't know what the 'secret' people were, or did. According to one source "They are considered the "most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece". Another thing of interest to me is that ... no where does it say it ever proven to be disbanded! (I actually read a book written by a 20th century author who based their plot on 'Kore' and the people who formed a secret 'Koresian' society. The trees, in the book, acted in a distinctly scary and supernatural way.)
  4. Take 3: It hasn't died on me yet (we've a storm with some wind and the connection keeps being skippy) so I'm posting this score as it is on the screen at the moment.
  5. I cautiously approached the statue. It was allegedly of a leprechaun, but I wondered if the sculptor had ever seen one. Never before, in America or in Ireland itself, had I seen a leprechaun wearing a pink tutu, gold hat and sporting a green beard. Something was wrong with this! Oh, I see the sign. It's not a leprechaun! It's of St. Patrick! Um, that seems weird too . . . (68 words)
  6. I am finding all kinds of 'new to me' foods which are specialties for the location but also quite delicious for a winter food. The picture shows a soup called 'crab bisque'. I had some, the other evening, at a restaurant and when I read this topic, I decided to share the joy with everyone in here. I googled for crab bisque and found that there are many variations on the theme. This is a recipe (and information) which sounds like what it ends up with is something like what I had the other night. Recipe source What even is crab bisque? It's an old-school creamy soup that's perfect for a special occasion. It's also easy [to make]. Here's everything you need to know. You can make the base of the soup up to 3 days ahead. But hold off on adding the crab until you're planning on serving it. Yields: 4 - 6 serving(s) Prep Time: 10 mins Total Time: 55 mins Ingredients 3 tbsp. butter 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp. Old Bay seasoning 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp. tomato paste 3 tbsp. flour 4 c. fish stock (or low-sodium vegetable broth) 1 c. dry white wine 1 bay leaf 1/2 c. heavy cream 1 lb. lump crab meat Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish Directions 1. In a large, heavy pot over medium heat, heat butter. Add onion and celery and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and Old Bay, then stir in garlic and tomato paste. Cook until garlic is fragrant and tomato paste coats vegetables, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle over flour and cook until absorbed, 1 minute more. 2. Pour in seafood stock and wine, then stir in bay leaf. Reduce heat and let simmer until liquid is reduced and flavors meld, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes. 3. Remove bay leaf and puree soup with an immersion blender on high until very smooth. Return to medium low heat and stir in heavy cream and half of the crab meat. Cook until just warmed through, about 5 minutes. 4. Divide among bowls and garnish with remaining crab meat and parsley before serving.
  7. Warmth is the name of the game for me in the winter time if there is snow on the ground and crispy air! Layers of clothes are necessary! A camisole, then a long sleeve thermal underwear and then maybe a t-shirt over that and then a vest and then a jacket with a hood on it is good. Scarf and knitted hat is good. Some form of sweatpants (all lined with fluffy warm material) is good, but Levi's can work. (I might have my red wind-pants over the sweats or Levis.) I prefer the sheepskin lined boots on my feet. Oh, yes, gloves are good too.
  8. Almost a duplicate of what Emily posted. My schedule fluctuates according to what is needed at the moment and who knows what will happen in what order on any given day. I will take note of the time scheduled and do my best to be there -- otherwise I'll be happy to participate via PM.
